History

The American University of Beirut, originally known as the Syrian Protestant College was founded on 1866 at the urging on W.M Thomson, a missionary that saw the importance a proper school of higher education with the ability to properly induct students in medical training would have for Beirut. 

Since then the University has played a key role in many important events in Lebanon history, famously during the country’s civil war the institution used all it’s resources to be able to continue education even at the heavy cost of it’s then current president life. Their efforts have been long rewarded and now a days it its one of the most famous and prestigious college level institutions in the country.

Admission requirements

Admission to the American University of Beirut is based on 2 main pillars, a student’s SAT1 results, and their high school records, each one of these parts hold a 50% of the application’s merit to the institution.

However teacher recommendations and the record of other extracurricular activities relevant to the chosen field of study can be attached as well and will be considered by the institution.

Student Life

The American University of Beirut has long been committed to offering it’s student body a varied and enriching experience to it’s student body, from it’s state of the art student center with multiple health and fitness facilities including an indoor pool, to it’s multiple housing facilities and the wide range of activities organized by the institution for the entertainment and growth of it’s students, there’s no shortage of things to do, or good will from the institution to do them, when it comes to AUB.

Part-time work

The American University of Beirut counts with it’s own Work Study Program, with fixed pay rates of 6,000LBP or 7,000LBP per hour depending on the job.

All of the jobs offered by AUB’s Work Study Program are for the university, and on the university’s premises.

Fees

At the American University of Beirut tuitions fees are determined per credit, this means each individual credit will incur a cost, and each semester requires a minimum of 12 credits, students early to enroll will be only be required to pay the first 12 credits they enroll in, while the rest of students will only have to pay up to 15 credits, with the remaining ones being free of cost.

The cost of each credit can vary notoriously from faculty to faculty, but in average each credit at the American University of Beirut amounts to $900 USD, which students can pay either in US dollars or Lebanese pounds.

Currently the American University of Beirut is ranked as the 637th best college level institution in the world, which makes it the overall number one university in Lebanon at the number one spot in the national ranking.
