The Chinese university of Hong Kong was first formed in 1693, however it’s origins date back to 1949, when the United College was first founded. The aforementioned college alongside New Asia College and Chung Chi College formed the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a federation of what would then on become constituent colleges.

While this process is slightly unconventional compared to a common merger, the process proved beneficial to all the institutions involved, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong grew to be one of the most important institutions in the country, with a student base who has receives not only the Nobel Prize but also the Turing Award and the Oswald Veblen Prize.

Programs Offered

Through 8 faculties, the Chinese University of Hong Kong offers undergraduate students a selection of roughly 50 different courses, however that doesn’t mean all of them will be available to all students, as some programs wont be available to international students or vice versa.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Chinese University of Hong Kong starts by knowing what kind of Student you count as, for which the institution lists 5 main categories:

  • JUPAS admissions
  • Non-JUPAS first year admission
  • Non-JUPAS senior year admission
  • International Admission
  • Mainland Admission

Mainland student admission is based on an entrance examination, and students applying this way will have an early chance at enrolling compared to the others.

Outside of the usual graduation certificates, international students are also required to provide proof of their English Language Proficiency and have completed at least one year of studies in another university.

For the 3 main categories the application requirements are actually pretty similar, proficiency at both Chinese and English is requested of the student and cut-off is largely based on the individual programs, the main difference is on the method of application, either directly through the university or through JUPAS.

Student Life

The Chinese University of Hong Kong counts with over 20 hostels toy house it’s students both on and off-campus, however transportation is provided for either case, which coupled with the variety of facilities the institution counts with for the ease of it’s students ranging from bookstores to an actual supermarket, means that all possible needs of an student will be fully-met in location.

Part-time work

The Chinese University of Hong Kong doesn’t appear to count with a dedicated student employment agency or web portal, while it is possible to find job listings related to specific faculties what this ultimately means is that students will largely be on their own when pursuing part-time work.


Local students at the university pay a HK$42,100 fee per year at the institution, while non-local students will face a fee of HK$145,000 per year instead.

On top of that for both cases, students will be asked for a caution fee which amounts to HK$450 when enrolling, and accommodation fees usually range from HK$10,00 to HK$12,000.


The Chinese University of Hong Kong is currently ranked as the 45th best college level institution in the world, which makes it the 2nd best university in all of Hong Kong.
