McMaster University

History

Founded in 1881, McMaster University was originally known as the Toronto Baptist College, one of many institutions born from the many educational initiatives held by Baptists in that era, the institution would then be reformed thanks to the donations of Senator William McMaster and then merged with Woodstock College, through this process the university was renamed to McMaster University, the name it occupies to this day.

Admission requirements

As an Ontario based University,  application to McMaster is done through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC), while this process is handled online, some courses will also require a supplementary application, for example a portfolio interview for Studio Art.

And advantage McMaster has over other institutions is that for international applicants that fall short on their English skill, the institution offers it’s  MELD Program, a one year program which improves on their English skills and allows them to join the following year if they approve the course.

Student Life

McMaster University supports students from the moment they get admitted, it hosts multiple counseling, events and programs designed help the transition from high-school to university..

As well as counting with over 250 different clubs on campus, a state-of-the-art fitness center for students, and multiple athletic and recreation programs, making sure all students have a way to stay entertained and healthy.

Part-time work

McMaster University counts with a very robust employment center for students, the McMaster Students Union offers a wide variety of services and activities designed to assist students, this includes over 300 part-time job opportunities and hundreds more volunteer opportunities.

Fees

Tuition at McMaster University is charged per unit. While a typical course has 3 unit, some faculties offer courses that are worth more than 3 units. A typical full course load is 5 courses in both the fall and winter terms, equaling 15 units / term and 30 units.

Average Unit Fee for Canadian Citizens/Residents: $300 per unit.

Average Unit Fee for International Students:  $1,150 per unit.

Summary

McMaster offers a high-quality education, with a tight focus, while it’s program list might seem smaller compared to other universities, it also shows a high level of organization not only on it’s programs but all aspects of institution, from it’s integration programs to the Students Union and even it’s website, which even counts with a cost calculator for prospective students, McMasters University stands for quality, and is a great institution that should be considered by anybody pursuing education in Canada.
