History of University of the Philippines

Founded on 1908, the University of the Philippines was created as a state university with the main objective of providing higher level education on the humanities.

However during the 1950s new academic units and with them more specializations were added to it’s syllabus, as the result of a reform process.

In the present day The University of the Philippines is recognized as it’s country’s most important university, and it has also been recognized by the Ramon Magsaysay Awards, a feat that has only been achieved by 3 Asian Schools.

Admission requirements

When it comes to admissions to the University there are 2 main scores to keep in mind, the weighted average of final grades obtained in high school, and the score in the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT).

UPCAT is the university’s own admission test, which counts with of 4 subtests: Language Proficiency, Reading Comprehension, Science, and Math.

Applications to UPCAT open around July and are held in October of every year, with an estimated length of 5 hours.

Student Life

Accommodation for students at the University of the Philippines comes in the form of it’s multiple halls, which strongly focus on providing a conductive atmosphere for any of their pursuits.

Freshmen get access to an admission packet which contains all sorts of vital information for their new school life, and various orientation programs are held to make integration even easier, as a whole the institution counts with well over 150 student organizations to enrich the school life of it’s students, and at least half of them are present in the main campus.

Part-time work

Part-time work is commonly offered to college students on Filipino websites, of which of course University of Philippines students will be amongst the most desirable, and as a whole the University tries to be as thorough on the expected expenses a student can face when pursuing a career on their campus, so all applicants can properly organize their budgets.

Fees

UPCAT Application Fee is: None for Filipino applicants, P450 for resident foreign applicants studying in the Philippines and US$50 for non-resident foreign applicants.

The matriculation fees for foreign students range from P4,661.50 to P31,490.50 for a maximum of 12 units.

The average tuition fees for local undergraduate students is P31,500.00 for 21 units.

The University of the Philippines is currently ranked as number 356 in the world, and 1st in the Philippines National Ranking.
