University of Otago

History

The University of Otago was first established in the year 1869, the result of the efforts of the Otago association, formed by followers of the Free Church of Scotland who wanted to establish a colony in Otago which followed their beliefs, this process included the establishment of an university, as a needed resource in the future years of the community, eventually a plot of land was set aside in the 60s for this goal, and on july 5 of 1871 the University of Otago properly opened it’s doors to the public.

Initially the institution could only confer a single degree, but it eventually became an affiliate college to the University of New Zealand, gaining more freedom in it’s degree granting, which it kept even after the dissolution of it’s associated university.
